SOFTER
LANDINGS FOR WORLD CUP PLAYERS?
The England rugby team made headlines
across the globe with their dual triumph against the New Zealand All
Blacks and World Cup holders Australia in June. Now the
team is looking forward to returning ‘down under’ to challenge the
holders for the cup – and UK-manufactured mesh elements in
the stadium’s turf could make life a little easier for them.
Melbourne-based
StrathAyr, a leading manufacturer of reinforced turf systems, uses
ReFlex® mesh elements from Blackburn-based Netlon as the core of its
engineered rootzone, and the rugby players could be competing on
StrathAyr’s ‘MegAyr’ turf when they play for the cup in
October.
MegAyr
reinforced turf comprises a rootzone of ReFlex® mesh elements, sand
and peat moss to provide load bearing, impact absorption benefits,
and a greatly improved environment for grass growth. It has been
developed by StrathAyr so that the complete system can be delivered
on the “roll”.
Netlon’s ReFlex®
mesh elements are 2” x 4” piece of flexible polypropylene mesh. When
blended uniformly within a rootzone profile the mesh elements
reinforce three dimensionally, acting like thousands of springs to
improve load bearing ability and resistance to compaction. The
spring back action also creates a cushioning effect on impact. Given
the ferocity of tackling and scrummaging in modern rugby the players
will welcome the softer landings the MegAyr system
promises.
ReFlex®
performance benefits have been scientifically demonstrated over 20
years and proven in some of the world’s leading sports stadia and
events arenas. Rolls of MegAyr are being prepared and held in
reserve for use as replacement turf in the rugby tournament stadia
as and when required.
